SURF OF A LIFETIME AT NIHIWATU

For surfers like us, Nihiwatu is a the ultimate dream vacation. In front of the Nihiwatu resort, located on a 2,5 kilometer stretched white sand beach. Lies probably the most fun lef-hand reef break we’ve ever surfed called ‘Occy’s Left’. We woke up every day at 5am for a wave check from our garden – and watch the sun rise over kilometers of white stretched sand and the infinity of coconut trees. Birds singing sounds of paradise. It was too surreal to take it all in.

Founder Claude and his wife, actually, originally created the Nihiwatu experience around the perfect wave they discovered in Sumba. Surf at Nihiwatu is very consistent. The wave faces southwest into the ocean and picks up swell arriving from miles away. During our stay the surf was small about 2-3 ft but still super fun. Also the coaches we’re able to teach surf, there we’re SUP boards available and guests could snorkel at low-tide. When the surf is bigger, expect fast waves and awesome barrels. Paddling out through the channel is easy, but lucky us there we’re also boats and jetski’s available. The life!

On the beach, the ‘Boathouse’ is located. Home of the watersports team, tropical beach bar and place we stalled our boards. They have everything available for daytime watersport activities. We could easily hang out here all day! If you’re not a surfer, you can be: there are amazing private surf instructors like Kyle to help you on the wave. Boards are available to use for every guest. If you’re not into surfing; snorkeling and fishing trips out front are amazing.

Nihiwatu reserves a slot in the lineup and is limited to only 10 people a day. For an additional fee, you can buy an extra slot. Good to know if that all these profits go to The Sumba Foundation. Main man Kyle also brought us one morning with the boat around the bay to another break. A heavy a-frame wave for the more experienced surfers out there ;)
